#2

We continued reading/discussing Son and we are almost done.  We'll finish it first thing tomorrow morning.  Students wrote their final Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger reflections today and they started cleaning/packing the class room (they are quite helpful).  We concluded the day with our class party.

Tomorrow students have a few more short assignments and we'll finish cleaning/packing the room.

It's almost show time!

Yes... It's all true ; )

It's Show Time!

Today went really well and I'm glad so many parents could come out to enjoy the festivities.  Our class celebration is tomorrow at 1:45pm.  Students will receive their learner profile awards and parents are more than welcome to attend.

On Thursday and Friday students will continue to work on their individual projects, we are going to finish reading Son, students will complete their last literature reflection, and we will clean and pack up the room.  Students brought home their work portfolios today and they will bring home more things tomorrow so hopefully they won't be loaded down on Friday afternoon when they leave.

Moving Forward Ceremony Update & CRCT news

We had rehearsal again today for the moving forward ceremony.  My class is seated on the far left on the floor.  Also, there are a few typos on the program and I apologize for that. Two children's names were left off and two of the group's names were switched.  I'll contact those parents individually.  The two groups that are switched on the programs are the Money Systems group and the Communism group.  Money Systems will be presented in room 326 and Communism will be presented in room 327.  I'll post a copy of where each group in my class is presenting outside of the classroom door.

Wednesday Schedule
8:30am --> Moving Forward Ceremony Begins
9:30am --> IB Exhibition Projects (in the 3rd floor classrooms)
11:15pm --> 5th Grade Luncheon on the upper field
(Lunch for all adults and children other than F.AVE students will be $3.25.  (Grilled hot dogs, chips, cookie and a drink)  Please bring exact amount.  This will help us serve everyone as quickly as possible.)
On Thursday we are going to have our classroom celebration at 1:45pm in the classroom.  I'll be passing out this years awards during that time.  On Friday, the last day of school, students will spend their time working on their individual projects and cleaning/organizing the room.

Lastly, the CRCT scores are in and ALL of my students passed Reading and Math.  Additionally, my students passed every other section except for in science (3 students were below the standards in this subject).  Congratulations to the Brainiacs!  All of your work this year paid off!

#6 -- FIELD DAY!

We had an awesome day at field day.  I got to harness my coaching skills and student coaches expertly organized their classmates into winning teams.  We won our basketball, volleyball, and kickball games. Additionally, we tied our soccer game and got a compliment from Ms. Karably about our behavior.  In all, it was a fabulous day.  Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered and brought refreshments.

As a reminder, the President Project is due on Monday and students should continue to work on their individual projects at home.  Have a great weekend!

Thank you for all of the beautiful flowers for Teacher's Appreciation week!

We finished the day by working on our Field Day t-shirts.  Our team name is "Black Lightning" and our slogan is "We will strike you down!" (FYI - students brainstormed names and voted for their final choice)

We had an excellent time on the MLK field trip.  It was informative and my students behaved very well.

Additional Protective Services Day Photos

#10

I began this week's Budget mini-unit and we started by watching the BrainPop videos about budgets, banking, and taxes.  We had a short discussion following the movies and students randomly selected their jobs and wrote about how they felt about their occupation and salary.  Tomorrow we will run the simulation and students will have practice making their own financial choices.

Students continued to work on their Exhibition projects I expect them to begin practicing their presentations this week.  Lastly, students were given time to work on their President project and individual projects.

#11

It's a very exciting day on the Ave!  The Protective Service Day was awesome and students had a truly unique experience.

ELA - We are continuing to read and discuss Son and I expect to finish it within the next week.

Social Studies - I continued the lessons on our most recent U.S. Presidents and students will receive the project guidelines on Monday.  They will have a week to complete their projects and I will give them some class time to complete them.

Exhibition - Students are continuing to work on their Exhibition projects.  Next week they will start assembling their products and practicing their presentations.

Field Day - Students decided on a class name, slogan, and design.  Please send in your child's T-shirt by Monday if you have not done so already.  Also, I will give students some class time to draw the design on their shirts.  We could use donations of fabric markers and other shirt decorating tools (I'm not an artist so I'm not exactly sure what to request).

There is actually a glasses lost and found... Ask Mrs. Girardeau if your child managed to lose their glasses this year.

Thank you for the flowers for teacher appreciation!

Secret Service Day

This week so far...

Students have been working really hard on their Exhibition and individual projects.  Today students took their 1950s-1975 Social Studies assessment.  The last assessment for Social Studies will be their President Pages project.  I started talking about presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford on Monday.  On Tuesday I started discussing Carter and Ronald Reagan.  I'll continue discussing the rest of the presidents tomorrow and on Friday students will get the guidelines and supplies for their project.

Next Friday (5/17) is our field day.  Please let me know if you can be a chaperone or donate water and/or snacks.  Also, please let me know if you can chaperone our Martin Luther King field trip next Wednesday, May 15th.  Thanks!

Field Day Information

“Sports Off the Ave”
The theme for our 2013 Field Day is: “SPORTS OFF THE AVE.”

Due to construction this year, we are taking our Field Day “off the Ave.” to McKoy Park. Field Day is Friday, May 17, 2013, and we are in need of volunteers to make this event a safe and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Students will be designing their own Field Day TEAM T-shirts. Please send a plain white (or light colored) t-shirt to school with your child this week so that he or she can start decorating it. If you are able to donate any extra t-shirts for students in need, you can purchase 3-packs of Hanes white undershirts very inexpensively at your local discount store and send them to school with your child.

***We could also use some parent volunteers to bring water and watch the festivities.  Please let me know if you can help.***

#18 - #17

ELA - We continued to read Son and had our weekly library visit today.

Social Studies - We finished up our John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, jr. notes and students wrote a reflection on the impact of each man's assassination on America. (this WILL be an assessment short-answer question).  Students will finish up their 1950s-1975 notes tomorrow and I expect them to study each night between now and the assessment next Wednesday.

Exhibition - Students continued working on gathering research for their topics.  Mrs. Washington, Ms. Karably, and I also helped students inquire more deeply into their topics and be more critical of their sources.  Please let me know if you want to stop by to help our Exhibition preparations.  We can use all the help we can get.
