Our first Civil Rights reading, "Separate but Unequal", informed readers about Charles Hamilton Houston, the dean of Thurgood Marshall's law school. Before the reading they inquired into how change can happen and then came to the conclusion that all of the actions were supposed to change the laws. In order to change the laws, according to the reading, you need people who are experts at the law. I began the unit with this text because I knew that all students were familiar with who Thurgood Marshall was, but I wanted them to understand who helped paved the way. During this unit students will explore different perspectives and gain an understanding of how people have struggled to get our nation to live up to its own Constitution.
