Unit of Inquiry:  Who We Are

Central Idea:  Who we are, where we live, and what we believe influences our viewpoints.

ELA (Reading & Writing) learning targets:  I can use the writing process to improve and organize my writing. I can include factual details and clear ideas within my writing. I can write a logical and grammatically correct informational paragraph. I can determine the main idea and supporting details in a text. I can summarize a piece of informational text. I can explain relationships between events & ideas & or procedures from an informational text.

We are going to finish The Giver this week. Students are going to learn about the characteristics of dystopian novels and analyze the overarching themes of the book.

Math learning targets:  I can use mental strategies to multiply large whole numbers. I can connect visual models to the standard multiplication algorithm.

This week students are going to continue learning strategies for multiplying large whole numbers.

Science learning target:  I can relate how microorganisms can be beneficial and harmful.

Students are going to continue collecting data on their potatoes. Hopefully we will see some microorganism growth! Students are also going to complete several activities this week that will help broaden their understandings about microorganisms.

Social Studies learning targets: I can inquire into how conflicts and issues cause change.

I can understand and discuss the causes of the Civil War.

We are going to continue learning about people and events that pushed the U.S. towards war.

Unit of Inquiry:  Who We Are

Central Idea:  Who we are, where we live, and what we believe influences our viewpoints.

ELA:  I can use text evidence to support my explanations.  I can write an informational essay.
We are reading The Giver and non-fiction Civil War related texts this week.  Students will continue to develop their skills with finding text evidence, understanding causation, and analyzing various perspectives.

Math:  I can use multiple strategies to multiply multi-digit numbers.
Students will work on using mental strategies to quickly multiply multi-digit numbers by various powers of ten.  Additionally, students will begin understanding, writing, and solving algebraic equations.

Science:  I can I can relate how microorganisms can be beneficial and harmful.
Students will begin learning about how microorganisms can be beneficial and/or harmful.  

Social Studies:  I can inquire into the causes of the Civil War.
This week we will be exploring the causes of the Civil War.  Today students watched a video and read a text about Nat Turner's Rebellion.  Later this week we will discuss the effect of Uncle Tom's Cabin and other Civil War causes.

Homework:  I'll be passing the homework out on TUESDAY and for THIS week it's due on Friday.

This Week's Events
The first FAVE spirit night is at F2O on Tuesday, Sept 20th!  F2O will donate 20% of all collected receipts from FAVE families (parent volunteers will be present at the restaurant to collect receipts).  F2O is donating a $25 gift card to the teacher whose class raises the most money.`

Village Gathering will be this Friday at 8:00am in the multi-purpose room.

T1W6 - We have almost made it through the first term!

This is the final week of the term and we will be busy!  Please see below for this week's agenda.  Please let me know if your child will be absent on Friday.  In addition to giving the Math and Science assessments on Friday, their memoirs are also due.    

Math - This week I'll be giving the end of module assessment.  After fall break we will continue working with decimals.
Homework - Study Guide (Students had class time to work on this today and it's due on Thursday.)
Review Videos: Decimals in Expanded Form, Rounding (look at previous blog posts for additional videos)

ELA - This week students are continuing to read The Giver and work on their comprehension skills.  They will complete the writing process with their memoirs and they are due on Friday.
Homework - Read for 30 minutes daily (On Tuesdays and Thursdays students have approximately 15 minutes of in-class reading time which can count towards their daily total.)

Science - Students will complete a classification review booklet in class which will they will also be able to use on their assessment.

Social Studies - Since students have already been assessed on the Bill of Rights and Amendment Change process, so they will continue to learn about the lead up to the Civil War.

We began the writing process for this term's summative narrative.  Students will be working on their stories in class for the rest of the term.

Central Idea:   Processes and procedures create structures that develop order in our world.

Math -  I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals using a variety of methods.

Review Concept:  Place Value of Decimals

ELA -  I can use the writing process to improve my writing. I can quote accurately from a fiction text to support my thinking.
This week we are going to continue reading The Giver and use it to work on comprehension and understanding theme. Students will begin writing their term 1 narratives this week. They will receive their organization documents and work through the writing process for the remainder of the term. Students will also have new vocabulary this week. They will receive a list of words to study at home; however, they won't have the sentences as part of their homework. We will complete the sentences and other review activities in class during the week.

Social Studies - I can understand the rights and responsibilities of a U.S. citizen. I can understand and discuss the causes of the Civil War.
Students will learn more about the attitudes regarding women's suffrage and we will begin to cover the lead up to the Civil War.

Science - I can classify living things.  I can understand plant structures and how they work.
Students will complete their celery lab and continue learning about how to organize living things.
